MDP

This page is dedicated to my Map Design project which was to create a large multiplayer scale map akin to a battlefield game or team based multiplayer first-person shooter. It shows my process and creative skill in ideation and practical skill with testing to achieve the exact map results I desired.
I used the in-game editor of the game Ravenfield to complete this project, which uses the Unity engine. However, the skills and tools I used are translatable to most engines.
The method I used for this level design was instinctive instead of planned. This was because of the purpose of the project. It was to create a map using terrain and elements to counteract imbalanced teams. So the process was very process-based.
Normally in single-player or multiplayer environments, this map creation process would largely take place on paper within pre-production.

01
Pre-Production
The project began with the study of different industry examples, as well as sketches of the potential designs I could use. This was a long process that included a great deal of research to uncover some of the best methods of creating enjoyable gameplay just from Map design elements.
02
First Attempts
After determining my goals and coming up with an idea of what the map will look like I began to create the initial foundations of a map. The first attempt at this was unsuccessful and resulted in a fresh start.

03
Objective Phase
Now I had completed the desired structure of the map it was time to begin creating the unique features of the map and designing the appeal and character of the map.
MAP DESIGN

04
Polish
Once all the objectives were completed it was time for me to provide the detail and cohesion across the map. I checked distances, visual angles, and advantages and created detailed foliage. I compartmentalized the map to improve my efficiency and help with my own personal organization.
05
Testing
This is where I used the in-game AI to show errors or poor decisions throughout the map. This was incredibly effective and allowed me to release the map to the public in a far more polished state.
06
Results
I am very happy with the results of the map and its gameplay experience. I achieved the goals I set out to achieve by creating an asymmetrical map. Community response has been positive and from my personal experience of playing the map it is very fun.
Level Design is definitely something I enjoy and can be considered another skill I have under my belt.
